Who was captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2016?
Answer
Darren Clarke
Darren Clarke was captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2016.
Clarke, a Northern Irish golfer and former major champion, led Europe against the United States at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. He was appointed captain in February 2015 by a five-member European selection panel that included recent captains Paul McGinley and José María Olazábal. Clarke's vice-captains included experienced Ryder Cup figures such as Thomas Bjørn, Padraig Harrington, Sam Torrance and Ian Poulter.
The 2016 contest took place from September 30 to October 2. The United States won 17–11, ending Europe's run of three consecutive Ryder Cup victories. American captain Davis Love III guided the home team, while Clarke's European side included established stars such as Rory McIlroy, Sergio García and Henrik Stenson.
A common mix-up is confusing Clarke with Ian Poulter, who was a celebrated European player and vice-captain, or with Paul McGinley, Europe's captain in 2014. Clarke was the official European captain for the 2016 match.
