Who voiced the young Ellie?

The story behind the answer

The young Ellie in Up was voiced by Elie Docter.

Elie Docter is the daughter of director Pete Docter, who co-wrote and directed Up. She provided the voice for the younger version of Ellie Fredricksen, the adventurous girl Carl meets near the beginning of the film. Jeremy Leary voiced young Carl, creating the childhood dialogue between the future married couple.

Ellie's childhood introduction establishes her admiration for explorer Charles Muntz and her dream of reaching Paradise Falls. Those ambitions become the emotional foundation of the film: Carl eventually fulfills his promise to take Ellie there, even after her death. The early scenes also introduce the adventure scrapbook that remains important throughout the story.

Viewers sometimes confuse Elie Docter with the actresses and voice performers who play adult Ellie in other Pixar material. Up's principal cast listing identifies Elie specifically with the younger character, while adult Ellie is represented through the film's later life stages rather than a conventional single speaking performance. The similar names in the answer choices are distractors, not alternate credits.
