Who voiced the Fairy Godmother in Disney's 1950 Cinderella?
Answer
Verna Felton
Answer
Verna Felton
Verna Felton voiced the Fairy Godmother in Disney’s 1950 animated Cinderella.
Felton was an established American voice and radio performer whose warm, expressive delivery helped define the Fairy Godmother as kindly, energetic, and slightly absent-minded. In the film, the character arrives after Cinderella’s dress is destroyed and uses magic to prepare her for the royal ball, including the transformation of the pumpkin, animals, gown, and slippers.
The role is sometimes confused with other major female performances in the movie. Eleanor Audley voiced Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s cold and manipulative stepmother, while Ilene Woods voiced Cinderella herself. Lucille Bliss voiced Anastasia Tremaine, one of Cinderella’s stepsisters. Those performers are all associated with the film, but Felton is the Fairy Godmother.
Cinderella premiered in Boston on February 15, 1950, before its United States release on March 4. Its success helped restore Walt Disney Productions’ finances after a difficult period during and after World War II. Felton’s Fairy Godmother became one of the studio’s best-known supporting characters, especially through the song “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.”
