Who voiced Russell in Up?

Russell in Up was voiced by Jordan Nagai. The character is an enthusiastic Wilderness Explorer who becomes Carl Fredricksen’s unexpected companion after arriving at Carl’s house just before its balloon-powered departure.

Nagai was not originally the family member expected to land the role: his older brother, Hunter, auditioned first. Pixar director Pete Docter reportedly noticed Jordan during the audition process, where his nonstop talking and energetic personality reminded the filmmakers of Russell. About 400 children auditioned for the part, and Nagai was eight when he was cast.

Russell’s casting was notable because he is an Asian American lead character, and Nagai’s performance helped make the boy feel distinctive without relying on stereotypes. Nagai also reprised Russell in related Up projects, including the short film Dug’s Special Mission, the Up video game, and later Pixar material. A common mix-up is confusing Russell’s voice with Ed Asner, who played Carl, or Bob Peterson, who co-wrote Up and voiced Dug.
