Pelé scored Brazil’s opening goal in the 1958 FIFA World Cup final.
The final was played on 29 June 1958 at Råsunda Stadium in Solna, Sweden. Pelé controlled a cross from Nilton Santos, flicked the ball over a defender, and volleyed it into the net. His goal put Brazil ahead before Sweden equalised.
Brazil eventually won 5–2, with Pelé scoring twice and Vavá also scoring twice. At 17 years and 249 days old, Pelé became the youngest player to score in a World Cup final, a record that remains notable in tournament history.
The victory gave Brazil its first World Cup title. It also marked the first time a European-hosted World Cup was won by a non-European team. Pelé’s performance made him an international star and began a career closely associated with World Cup success.
