Italy won the first FIFA World Cup final to go into extra time, defeating Czechoslovakia 2–1 in 1934.
The final was played at the Stadio Nazionale PNF in Rome on 10 June 1934. Antonín Puč gave Czechoslovakia the lead, but Raimundo Orsi equalised for Italy before the match went beyond 90 minutes. Angelo Schiavio scored the decisive goal during extra time.
This was only the second World Cup tournament, and Italy became the first European champion. The match is sometimes confused with the 1954 final, another title match that involved extra time, but West Germany’s 3–2 victory over Hungary came two decades later. Italy’s 1934 triumph was also the first World Cup won by a host nation, although the broader host-winning record includes later champions such as England, Argentina and France.
