Who ruled as Soviet dictator from 1924 until 1953?

Josef Stalin ruled the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. He emerged as the country’s dominant leader after Vladimir Lenin died in January 1924, defeating rivals including Leon Trotsky in a prolonged internal power struggle.

Stalin formally served as General Secretary of the Communist Party from 1922 to 1952 and became chairman of the Council of Ministers in 1941. Although the Soviet Union initially had a collective leadership after Lenin’s death, Stalin gradually concentrated authority in his own hands and established a personal dictatorship by the late 1920s and 1930s.

His rule brought rapid industrialization and forced agricultural collectivization through the Five-Year Plans, but also famine, mass repression, the Great Purge, and the Gulag forced-labor system. During World War II, Stalin led the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany and helped establish Soviet influence across Eastern Europe. He died on March 5, 1953, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.
