Who rescues Frodo and Sam from the volcano?

The story behind the answer

Who rescues Frodo and Sam from the volcano? The Great Eagles rescue them.

After the One Ring is destroyed and Mount Doom begins to collapse, Frodo and Sam are stranded on the volcanic slopes. They are exhausted, injured, and unable to escape Mordor on their own.

The Great Eagles fly into the devastated region and carry the hobbits to safety. In Tolkien’s account, the rescuers are Gwaihir, Landroval, and Meneldor. Gandalf accompanies the Eagles during the rescue, but he is not the person who physically saves Frodo and Sam.

Thorondor is a different Eagle from Tolkien’s mythology, associated primarily with events of the First Age. He does not rescue Frodo and Sam, so the stored answer incorrectly combines Gandalf with the wrong Eagle.
