Who becomes Darth Sidious's new apprentice at the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith?

The story behind the answer

Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Sidious’s new apprentice at the end of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, taking the Sith name Darth Vader.

Anakin turns to the dark side after believing that Sidious can help him save Padmé Amidala from death. He assists Sidious in defeating Mace Windu, pledges himself to the Sith, and receives the name Darth Vader. Sidious then orders him to lead the assault on the Jedi Temple and eliminate the remaining Separatist leaders.

The film’s ending shows Vader badly injured after his duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar. Sidious rescues him and places him inside the black armor and life-support suit that define the character in the original trilogy. The familiar helmet and mechanical breathing therefore mark the completion of Anakin’s transformation.

A common mix-up is choosing Luke Skywalker or Ben Solo, who are both related to Vader but never become Sidious’s apprentice in Episode III. “Rae” is also likely a misspelling of Rey, a much later character. Before Anakin, Sidious’s major apprentices included Darth Maul and Count Dooku, also known as Darth Tyranus.
