Who redesigned McDonald’s logo into the familiar overlapping M in 1968?

The story behind the answer

Jim Schindler redesigned McDonald’s logo into the familiar overlapping M in 1968.

Schindler’s design combined the two arch forms into a single, highly recognizable letter-like mark. The change made the arches work more effectively as a corporate logo, rather than only as architectural features attached to restaurant buildings.

The Golden Arches had already become associated with McDonald’s restaurants during the 1950s and 1960s. The 1968 redesign helped standardize that visual identity as the company expanded nationally and internationally.

Louis Cheskin is often mentioned in discussions of McDonald’s branding because of his design-consulting work, while Ray Kroc led the company’s business expansion. Neither is the credited designer of this 1968 logo redesign.
