Margo is the eldest of Gru’s three adopted daughters and is characterized as responsible, observant, and protective of Edith and Agnes. Cosgrove’s performance helps establish Margo as the most mature child in the family, especially during the first film’s transition from Gru’s criminal life to parenthood.

Cosgrove was already widely known for television roles before joining the animated franchise. Her voice work as Margo became one of her best-known film roles, and she returned for later Despicable Me installments.
