In Despicable Me 2, Gru takes a job making jelly before returning to action.
After becoming a devoted father, Gru has left supervillainy behind and tries to live a more ordinary life. One of his attempts at legitimate employment involves producing unusual jelly products. The job provides comic contrast with his former career and shows that his new domestic life does not immediately translate into a successful business career.
The Anti-Villain League later recruits Gru to investigate a new criminal threat. His return to fieldwork places him alongside Lucy Wilde and brings him back into the world of disguises, gadgets, and secret operations.
This detail is easy to confuse with Gru’s earlier villainous inventions or with Eduardo Pérez’s restaurant, which is a separate setting in the film. Gru’s jelly-making job belongs to his post-villain, pre-investigation period.
