Who portrayed Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Miranda Otto portrayed Éowyn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The Australian actor first appears as Éowyn in The Two Towers and returns in The Return of the King.

Éowyn is the niece of Théoden, king of Rohan, and the sister of Éomer. Although she is expected to remain behind while the men ride to war, she longs for freedom, purpose, and the chance to defend her people. Her storyline makes her one of the trilogy’s central female warriors.

Otto prepared for the role with stunt choreography and horse-riding training. Her most famous sequence comes at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where Éowyn disguises herself as a soldier named Dernhelm and defeats the Witch-king of Angmar after he declares that no man can kill him.

The other options are associated with different characters: Cate Blanchett played Galadriel, Liv Tyler played Arwen, and Kate Winslet was not part of the trilogy’s cast. Otto later reprised Éowyn as narrator and voice actor in The War of the Rohirrim.
