Who portrayed Detective Monique Jeffries on SVU?

The story behind the answer

Michelle Hurd portrayed Detective Monique Jeffries on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Jeffries was one of the original detectives in Manhattan’s fictional Special Victims Unit. She appeared during the first season and briefly worked with John Munch after Brian Cassidy departed. Hurd’s performance helped define the early squad before the show’s cast and character lineup changed substantially.

The character’s storyline became increasingly personal. After surviving a traumatic incident involving a van explosion, Jeffries began behaving recklessly. She later admitted having sex with a suspect from an earlier rape investigation, leading the department to remove her from active duty and place her in treatment. She was eventually transferred away from the unit.

Viewers sometimes confuse Hurd with Diane Neal or Tamara Tunie because all three were prominent women in the SVU ensemble. Neal played Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak, while Tunie played medical examiner Melinda Warner. Michaela McManus later played Assistant District Attorney Kim Greylek.
