Gene Wilder played Willy Wonka in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, based on Roald Dahl’s novel.
The musical fantasy film was directed by Mel Stuart and adapted from Dahl’s 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Wilder’s performance made the eccentric chocolatier memorable through a combination of playful warmth, theatrical mystery, and sudden unpredictability.
Peter Ostrum played Charlie Bucket, the child who finds a Golden Ticket and visits Wonka’s factory. The cast also included Jack Albertson as Grandpa Joe and Denise Nickerson as Violet Beauregarde. David Wolper produced the film, while the songs were written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.
The 1971 title differs from the novel’s title in the United States. Later screen versions featured Johnny Depp in 2005 and Timothée Chalamet in 2023, so those actors are associated with Wonka but not with the original 1971 performance.
