Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka in the 2005 film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Directed by Tim Burton, the film is based on Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Depp portrays Wonka as an eccentric and emotionally guarded confectioner who invites five children into his extraordinary factory.
The film also stars Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket and Helena Bonham Carter as Charlie’s mother. It differs from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in its title, visual style, character history, and several story details.
Gene Wilder played Wonka in the 1971 adaptation, which is why the two performers are often confused in trivia questions. Johnny Depp’s version includes additional material about Wonka’s childhood and relationship with his father, elements not presented in the same way in Dahl’s original novel.
