Who played the role of Short Round in Temple of Doom?

The story behind the answer

Who played Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? Ke Huy Quan played Short Round.

Short Round is Indiana Jones's young Chinese sidekick in the 1984 film. He begins the adventure as a taxi driver in Shanghai and escapes the city with Indy and Willie Scott after Lao Che's failed assassination attempt. In India, Short Round helps Indy resist Mola Ram's mind control, interrupting the attempted sacrifice of Willie and helping save the Maharajah and the enslaved children.

Quan was only 13 when he was cast. His younger brother had gone to audition, but casting director Mike Fenton noticed Quan giving directions behind the camera and asked him to try out. Around 6,000 children reportedly auditioned worldwide. Spielberg and Harrison Ford also improvised the memorable scene in which Short Round accuses Indy of cheating at cards.

The name Jonathan Ke Quan is a genuine alternate name associated with the actor, which can cause confusion, but Ke Huy Quan is the standard answer today. He later played Data in The Goonies and returned to acting decades later, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Everything Everywhere All at Once.
