Who played the rival archaeologist Belloq in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'?

The story behind the answer

Paul Freeman played René Belloq, the rival archaeologist in *Raiders of the Lost Ark*. Belloq is Indiana Jones’s intellectual and professional adversary, working with the Nazis to locate the Ark of the Covenant.

The character is not simply a treasure hunter chasing Jones from a distance. Belloq repeatedly exploits Jones’s discoveries, including taking the fertility idol after Jones escapes the temple at the beginning of the film. Their rivalry is built on a contrast between Jones’s willingness to take risks and Belloq’s more calculating, opportunistic approach.

Freeman was an English actor with extensive theatre experience, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Steven Spielberg chose him after seeing his performance in the docudrama *Death of a Princess*. Freeman’s controlled, sophisticated performance helped make Belloq a memorable villain rather than a one-dimensional henchman.

Belloq’s fate is closely tied to the film’s supernatural climax. When the Ark is opened, its power kills him and the Nazi officers present. The other listed actors played different characters: John Rhys-Davies was Sallah, Denholm Elliott was Marcus Brody, and Ronald Lacey was Major Toht.
