Who played the Klingon commander Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country?

The story behind the answer

Christopher Plummer played Klingon commander Chang in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Chang is a senior Klingon officer who opposes peace with the Federation after the destruction of Praxis. He becomes the film’s principal Klingon military antagonist and commands the Bird of Prey used in the final battle with Kirk’s Enterprise.

Plummer brought a theatrical, Shakespeare-influenced performance to the role. The film deliberately links Chang’s language and rhetoric to Shakespeare, reinforcing its themes of political suspicion, historical resentment, and the possibility of reconciliation. Plummer had worked with William Shatner before, and their professional relationship helped shape the adversarial dynamic between Chang and Kirk.

Malcolm McDowell played Dr. Tolian Soran in Star Trek: Generations, while F. Murray Abraham played Ru’afo in Star Trek: Insurrection. Neither actor portrayed Chang, whose distinctive eyepatch and ornate uniform make him one of the franchise’s memorable Klingon villains.
