Amrish Puri played the cult leader Mola Ram in *Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom*. Mola Ram is the film’s principal villain, a Thuggee priest who leads rituals involving human sacrifice and seeks to restore the power of the fictional Sankara Stones.
Puri was one of India’s most prominent actors, particularly known for powerful villainous roles in Hindi cinema. The production wanted Indian actors for the major Indian characters rather than casting Western performers in darkened makeup. Puri was working on numerous Indian films when he was approached and initially declined the part, but Richard Attenborough encouraged him to reconsider after their work together on *Gandhi*.
Mola Ram’s appearance, chants, ceremonial costume, and imposing performance made him one of the most recognizable villains in the franchise. His character draws on the film’s fictionalized and controversial depiction of Thuggee traditions, blending historical references with fantasy, horror, and adventure elements.
The name is sometimes confused with Om Puri, another celebrated Indian actor, but Om Puri did not play Mola Ram. Roshan Seth played Prime Minister Chattar Lal, while Saeed Jaffrey and Roshan Seth were associated with other roles in Indian cinema.
