Michonne is introduced as a guarded, highly capable survivor who carries a katana and uses two chained walkers to conceal her movements. She first appears in the television series during season 2's finale, then becomes a major character from season 3 onward. Her suspicion of Woodbury's leader, the Governor, helps expose the danger behind his seemingly safe community.

Gurira joined the main cast in season 3 and portrayed Michonne through season 10, later returning as a guest in season 11.
