Who played Dr. Leonard McCoy in the three alternate-universe Star Trek films?

The story behind the answer

Karl Urban played Dr. Leonard McCoy in the three alternate-universe Star Trek films.

Urban portrayed McCoy in Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). These films take place in the Kelvin timeline, a parallel continuity created when the Romulan mining vessel Narada travels back in time and changes events in 2233. Urban's performance was shaped by DeForest Kelley's portrayal of McCoy in the original television series and films.

The character remains the Enterprise's chief medical officer and keeps his familiar friendship and professional rivalry with James T. Kirk and Spock. The new continuity gives McCoy a revised personal history, including his divorce and custody of his daughter, which helps explain his decision to join Starfleet.

Urban is a New Zealand actor also known for roles in The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Boys. He is sometimes confused with Chris Pine, who plays Kirk in the same film series.
