Who played Dr. Ellie Sattler in the 1993 film Jurassic Park?

Laura Dern played Dr. Ellie Sattler in the 1993 film Jurassic Park.

Sattler is a paleobotanist who visits John Hammond’s dinosaur park with paleontologist Alan Grant and mathematician Ian Malcolm. When the park’s systems fail, she becomes one of the central figures trying to restore power and protect the visitors. Dern’s performance helped make Sattler one of the film’s most prominent scientific and action-oriented characters.

Jurassic Park was directed by Steven Spielberg and adapted from Michael Crichton’s 1990 novel. The film expands Sattler’s role compared with the book and makes her romantically involved with Grant, played by Sam Neill. Dern later reprised the character in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion.

Helen Hunt is a plausible distractor because she was among the actresses considered for or associated with the casting process, but she did not play Sattler. Julianne Moore joined the franchise in The Lost World: Jurassic Park as Sarah Harding, a different character.
