At the start of The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the girl attacked by Compsognathus is Cathy Bowman.
Cathy is a young British girl visiting Isla Sorna with her wealthy parents aboard a yacht. She wanders away from the picnic area and encounters a small Compsognathus, often called a “Compy” in the franchise. When more of the animals emerge, they surround and attack her on the beach.
The opening incident is brief but important to the plot. Cathy survives, and John Hammond later cites the attack as evidence that Isla Sorna is dangerous. The event helps Hammond’s nephew, Peter Ludlow, seize control of InGen and pursue a plan to exploit the island’s dinosaurs commercially.
Viewers sometimes confuse Cathy with Lex Murphy or Kelly Curtis because all three are young female characters connected to the Jurassic Park films. Cathy is a separate character, portrayed by Camilla Belle. The scene also echoes Michael Crichton’s first Jurassic Park novel, which opens with a child attacked by a small dinosaur, though the film changes the details and location.
