Carl Spackler is the assistant greenskeeper at Bushwood Country Club, the fictional golf club where much of the 1980 comedy takes place. The character is locked in an absurd, increasingly destructive battle with a gopher, while also delivering rambling stories and one of the film’s most memorable comic performances.

Murray’s role became the movie’s signature showcase, even though Caddyshack has several major comic leads. Chevy Chase plays the wealthy and effortlessly confident golfer Ty Webb, Rodney Dangerfield plays the loud real-estate developer Al Czervik, and Ted Knight plays the club’s humorless judge, Elihu Smails.

Many of Carl’s scenes were shaped by improvisation. The famous monologue about his supposed caddying experience at the Masters was developed around Murray’s comic storytelling style. The movie was directed by Harold Ramis and co-written by Ramis, Brian Doyle-Murray and Douglas Kenney. It was released in 1980 and later became a major influence on sports comedies.
