Who photographed Georgia O'Keeffe in a celebrated series from 1918 to 1937?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz photographed Georgia O'Keeffe in a celebrated series made from 1918 to 1937.

Stieglitz was a pioneering American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art. He first showed O'Keeffe's work at 291 and then created a sustained photographic record of her, producing more than 300 images over nearly two decades.

The photographs range from formal portraits to intimate studies and helped establish O'Keeffe as a recognizable figure in the New York art world. Their public display also shaped how critics and viewers discussed her identity, body, and artistic persona.

O'Keeffe and Stieglitz married in 1924. Although he was a major supporter, O'Keeffe's career developed on its own terms, and she became one of the most successful American artists of the twentieth century. Stieglitz's series should not be confused with portraits made by Paul Strand or Edward Steichen.
