In which New York town did Georgia O'Keeffe study at the Art Students League?
Answer
New York City
Answer
New York City
Georgia O'Keeffe studied at the Art Students League in New York City.
O'Keeffe attended the Art Students League of New York in 1907 and 1908. The school offered a less formal and more flexible environment than many traditional academies, and she studied under William Merritt Chase, a prominent American painter and teacher.
She won a scholarship for her still life Dead Rabbit with a Copper Pot, demonstrating strong academic skill. Her early training included drawing from casts and models, as well as still-life and figure work. This period gave her a conventional foundation before she moved toward a more personal form of abstraction.
O'Keeffe later studied at the University of Virginia and worked as an art teacher in Texas and South Carolina. Her reputation, however, grew after Alfred Stieglitz exhibited her abstract charcoal drawings in New York. The Art Students League was therefore an important early stage, not the place where she developed her mature New Mexico style.
