Who localized the name Rockman to Mega Man for Capcom USA? Joe Morici localized the name Rockman to Mega Man for Capcom USA.
Morici was president of Capcom USA’s Consumer Products Division when the character was being prepared for the Western market. He considered “Rockman” unsuitable for American audiences and selected “Mega Man” instead, giving the series the name by which it became widely known outside Japan.
The original name was not random. “Rock” was designed to pair with the character’s sister robot, Roll, creating a musical wordplay based on rock and roll. That naming concept remained part of the Japanese version of the franchise, while the Western release adopted a more market-oriented title.
This decision is sometimes mistakenly attributed to Akira Kitamura or Keiji Inafune, who were important creators of the character and game. Kitamura designed the original pixel-art concept, and Inafune refined the character artwork, but neither is credited with the Capcom USA localization decision. Marc Ericksen, another name sometimes associated with the series, painted the North American Mega Man 2 box art rather than renaming the character.
