Who is widely known as the father of modern skiing?

The story behind the answer

Sondre Norheim is widely known as the father of modern skiing.

Norheim was a Norwegian skier from Morgedal in Telemark who helped transform skiing from a practical form of winter travel into a modern sport. During the nineteenth century, he developed and promoted turning techniques that made skis more controllable on descents.

He is especially associated with the Telemark turn and the Christiania turn, an early form of the parallel turn. Norheim also helped popularize ski jumping and designed ski equipment, including bindings that held the heel more securely while still allowing movement.

The title is a historical nickname rather than an official position. Other pioneers, including Mathias Zdarsky, also made major contributions, particularly to alpine skiing technique and equipment. Norheim’s influence is most strongly linked to Norwegian skiing traditions and the development of ski sport.
