Who is the youngest driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix?
Answer
Max Verstappen
Answer
Max Verstappen
Max Verstappen is the youngest driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix, doing so at 18 years and 228 days old.
He set the record at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, his first race for Red Bull Racing. Verstappen had been promoted from Toro Rosso after just four races of the season, replacing Daniil Kvyat. In Barcelona, he qualified fourth and inherited the lead after Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided on the opening lap.
Verstappen then managed his tyres and defended from Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen to win the race. The victory made him the first driver born in the 1990s to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix and displaced Sebastian Vettel as the youngest winner in championship history.
The record concerns the youngest race winner, not the youngest driver to start, qualify on pole, or become world champion. Verstappen also remains notable for making his F1 debut at only 17, when he raced for Toro Rosso in 2015. His early promotion and immediate victory made the result one of the defining breakthrough moments of the modern era.
