At the 1997 European Grand Prix, who took pole after three drivers set the exact same qualifying time?
Answer
Jacques Villeneuve
Answer
Jacques Villeneuve
Jacques Villeneuve took pole at the 1997 European Grand Prix after three drivers set exactly the same qualifying time.
Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Heinz-Harald Frentzen each recorded 1:21.072 at the Nürburgring. Because the timing system measured to one-thousandth of a second, the three laps were officially identical rather than merely rounded to the same displayed figure.
Formula 1’s tie-break rule awarded the higher grid position to the driver who had set the time first. Villeneuve posted his lap 14 minutes into qualifying, Schumacher matched it later, and Frentzen set the same time with nine minutes remaining. That placed Villeneuve first, Schumacher second and Frentzen third.
The result was historically unusual: it was the first time in World Championship history that three drivers had ended qualifying on exactly the same time. Villeneuve also went on to win the race and the 1997 drivers’ championship.
