Who is the wife of Odin and queen of the Æsir?

The story behind the answer

Frigg is Odin’s wife and the queen of the Æsir in Norse mythology.

Frigg is one of the foremost goddesses of the Æsir, the divine group associated with Odin and Asgard. The Prose Edda identifies her as Odin’s wife and places her among the highest-ranking goddesses. She is associated with marriage, motherhood, prophecy, and clairvoyance, and her home is Fensalir.

Frigg is especially prominent in the story of her son Baldr. After he dreams of danger, she obtains promises from nearly everything in the world that it will not harm him. Loki discovers that mistletoe was overlooked, and this exception ultimately enables Baldr’s death. Frigg’s grief and her attempt to recover him are among the most important emotional episodes in Norse myth.

Frigg is often confused with Freyja because both are major goddesses and their names may appear in related Germanic forms. They are generally treated as distinct figures in the surviving Norse sources. Another lasting trace of Frigg is Friday, whose English name ultimately means “Frigg’s day.”
