What is the name of Thor's hammer in Norse mythology?

The story behind the answer

The name of Thor’s hammer in Norse mythology is Mjölnir.

Mjölnir is Thor’s principal weapon and one of the most important objects in Norse myth. The hammer is described as devastating in combat, yet it also has a sacred role: Thor can use it to bless or hallow people and objects. When thrown, it never misses and returns to Thor’s hand, although its handle is famously shorter than intended.

In the Prose Edda, the dwarfs Sindri and Brokkr forge Mjölnir during a contest involving Loki. Loki’s interference causes the short handle, but the gods still judge the hammer the finest of the treasures produced. In the poem Þrymskviða, the giant Þrymr steals Mjölnir and demands Freyja as his bride; Thor and Loki recover it through a disguise plot.

Mjölnir was also worn as a hammer-shaped pendant during the Viking Age. It is commonly confused with Gungnir, Odin’s spear, Dáinsleif, a legendary sword, or Skíðblaðnir, Freyr’s magical ship.
