Which Norse god avenged the death of Baldr?
Answer
Vali
Answer
Vali
Váli is the Norse god who avenged the death of Baldr.
According to the surviving Eddic tradition, Váli was born specifically to punish Baldr’s killer. His father was Odin, and his mother was Rindr, described in different sources as a goddess or a human princess. Váli matured with extraordinary speed: in the best-known account, he became an adult within a single day.
Baldr was accidentally killed when the blind god Höðr, manipulated by Loki, shot him with a dart made from mistletoe. Váli then killed Höðr before washing his hands or combing his hair, fulfilling the grim requirements of vengeance. Some sources also associate him with Loki’s binding, though the texts contain variant readings and a separate figure named Váli, son of Loki, appears in Snorri’s account.
Váli is easily confused with Víðarr. Víðarr avenges Odin by killing Fenrir during Ragnarök; Váli’s defining act is avenging Baldr. Both brothers are said to survive Ragnarök and inhabit the renewed world.
