Who is the protagonist of the original Assassin's Creed game?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist of the original Assassin's Creed game is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian Assassin operating during the Third Crusade. The game follows his fall from grace after a failed mission, his demotion within the Brotherhood, and his efforts to regain rank by carrying out a series of assassinations.

Altaïr is introduced as an accomplished but overconfident Master Assassin. His mentor, Al Mualim, removes his rank and equipment before assigning missions that gradually expose a conspiracy involving the Templars and political leaders in the Levant. A common mix-up is confusing Altaïr with Ezio Auditore, who became the lead character in Assassin's Creed II and two follow-up games.

The character also appears in later franchise stories, including Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which connects his life with Ezio's. His name is sometimes written with different apostrophe or transliteration conventions, but Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the standard English form.
