Who is the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist of The Legend of Zelda series is Link.

Link is the usually playable hero who travels through Hyrule, explores dungeons, solves puzzles, gathers equipment, and fights the forces threatening the kingdom. His recurring missions often involve defeating Ganon or another major villain and rescuing or aiding Princess Zelda.

Although he is commonly recognized by his green tunic, pointed cap, sword, and shield, Link is not one single person across the entire series. Most games feature a different incarnation of Link, connected through the fictional history of Hyrule as descendants, reincarnations, or successors. Several versions are children or teenagers, and their designs and abilities differ.

The name “Zelda” in the series title often causes newcomers to assume that Zelda is the hero, but she is generally the princess and a central supporting character. Link is also traditionally a quiet or silent protagonist, allowing players to project themselves into the adventure. One major exception is Echoes of Wisdom, released in 2024, in which Zelda becomes the primary playable protagonist.
