In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, the game takes place on Koholint Island.
Koholint is an isolated island outside the usual setting of Hyrule. Link arrives there after a storm wrecks his ship, and he is rescued by Marin and her father Tarin. A mysterious owl then tells him that he must awaken the Wind Fish, the island's guardian, if he wants to return home.
Link explores Koholint's villages, forests, mountains, beaches, and dungeons while collecting eight Instruments of the Sirens. These instruments are needed to play the Ballad of the Wind Fish and open the giant egg atop Mount Tamaranch.
A major twist is that Koholint is part of the Wind Fish's dream. This makes the island unlike most Zelda settings and explains its unusual mixture of Zelda characters and cameos from other Nintendo games. Mabe Village, one of the island's locations, is sometimes mistaken for the island's name.
