Who is the professor that shelters the Pevensie children in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The story behind the answer

Professor Kirke, whose full name is Digory Kirke, shelters the Pevensie children in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The children stay at his country house during wartime evacuation from London.

Kirke is the first adult in the novel to take Lucy’s account of Narnia seriously. When Susan and Peter question whether Lucy is telling the truth, he points out that her story deserves careful consideration. His response helps the children—and the reader—accept the possibility of another world.

Kirke also appears as a child in The Magician’s Nephew, which reveals his connection to Narnia’s creation. In that earlier novel he is Digory, who witnesses Aslan creating the world. Lewis therefore uses the same character as both a doorway into the series and a link between its beginning and later events.
