Who is the pirate protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag?

The story behind the answer

Edward Kenway is the pirate protagonist of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Edward is a Welsh privateer-turned-pirate who becomes entangled in the conflict between Assassins and Templars during the Golden Age of Piracy. The game is set largely in the Caribbean in the early eighteenth century, with Havana, Kingston, and Nassau serving as major locations.

Released in 2013, Black Flag combines land-based stealth with extensive naval exploration. Edward commands the ship Jackdaw, which can be upgraded with stronger weapons, armor, and cargo capacity. Historical pirates, including Blackbeard, appear alongside fictional characters.

Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, is a historical character and ally in the game, not its main playable hero.
