Al Mualim is the mentor and leader of the Assassin Order in the first Assassin's Creed game.
He directs Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad from the fortress of Masyaf and sends him on missions against targets connected to the Templar conspiracy. Al Mualim's title means “the teacher” or “the master,” reflecting his authority and role in Altaïr's training.
The character is loosely connected to Rashid ad-Din Sinan, the historical leader of the Nizari Ismaili community at Masyaf, although the game's story is fictionalized. Al Mualim is not the same person as Altaïr, and he should not be confused with later mentors such as Mario Auditore or Achilles Davenport. His relationship with Altaïr becomes central to the game's final revelations.
