Who is the main protagonist of C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy?
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Elwin Ransom is the main protagonist of C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy.
Ransom is introduced in Out of the Silent Planet, published in 1938, where he is abducted and taken to Mars, known in the series as Malacandra. He later returns as a central figure in Perelandra and That Hideous Strength, becoming a scholar, linguist, and spiritual leader in the conflict between good and evil.
The trilogy combines planetary romance, Christian theology, linguistic speculation, and criticism of dehumanizing modern systems. Its setting is not simply outer space adventure: Lewis uses other worlds to examine humanity's relationship with technology, power, and creation.
Mark and Jane Studdock become especially important in That Hideous Strength, the third volume, but they are not the trilogy's recurring central character. Ransom's surname also creates a deliberate association with themes of rescue and sacrifice.
