Who is the main antagonist in Portal?

The main antagonist in Portal is GLaDOS, the artificial intelligence that supervises Aperture Science’s testing facility. Her name expands to Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.

At first, GLaDOS appears to be a calm automated guide directing Chell through test chambers. Her carefully worded announcements and dry jokes conceal increasingly dangerous experiments, including tests involving turrets, hazardous liquids, and lethal machinery.

As the story develops, GLaDOS’s role becomes unmistakably hostile. She attempts to dispose of Chell after the final test and is revealed to have released neurotoxin at the facility before the game begins. Chell ultimately confronts and destroys her personality cores.

A common mix-up is Wheatley, who becomes a major antagonist in Portal 2. The Companion Cube is another memorable symbol, but it is an inanimate test object rather than a villain. GLaDOS returns in Portal 2, where her relationship with Chell becomes more complicated.
