Who is the lead vocalist of Green Day?

The story behind the answer

The lead vocalist of Green Day is Billie Joe Armstrong. He is also the band's primary guitarist and one of its founding members.

Armstrong formed the group with childhood friend Mike Dirnt in Rodeo, California, in 1987, when both were teenagers. The band was originally called Sweet Children before changing its name to Green Day in 1989. Armstrong has remained the band's lead singer throughout its career, while Dirnt provides bass and backing vocals.

Green Day's breakthrough came with Dookie in 1994, which brought the band's melodic punk sound to a worldwide audience. Armstrong wrote or co-wrote many of the group's best-known songs, including "Basket Case," "When I Come Around," and "American Idiot."

A common mix-up is confusing Armstrong with Mike Dirnt, who occasionally sings lead or shares vocal duties on individual songs. Jason White is a touring guitarist, and Tré Cool is the drummer; neither is Green Day's principal vocalist.
