Which producer co-produced Green Day's albums Dookie and American Idiot?

The story behind the answer

Which producer co-produced Green Day’s albums Dookie and American Idiot? The answer is Rob Cavallo.

Rob Cavallo co-produced both albums with Green Day. He first worked with the band on Dookie, their 1994 major-label debut, after joining Reprise Records and helping connect the group with the Warner organization. The collaboration became one of the defining producer-band partnerships in modern punk rock.

Dookie was recorded in 1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, and its polished but energetic sound helped bring Green Day’s fast, melodic punk to a mass audience. Cavallo later returned for American Idiot, released in 2004, where he produced the album in collaboration with the band.

A common mix-up is Chris Lord-Alge, who mixed American Idiot but was not its producer. Jerry Finn also worked as an engineer on Dookie, while Butch Vig produced other landmark alternative-rock records. Cavallo’s role extended beyond studio production: he was also involved in Green Day’s signing to Reprise and later produced several more of the band’s albums.
