Who is the human protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Elwin Ransom is the human protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.

Ransom first appears in Out of the Silent Planet as a Cambridge philologist who is kidnapped and transported to Malacandra. His knowledge of languages becomes crucial as he communicates with the planet’s intelligent inhabitants and discovers that Earth occupies a morally isolated place in the wider cosmos.

He returns in the trilogy’s second volume, Perelandra, and in the final novel, That Hideous Strength. Mark Studdock is the central human character in That Hideous Strength, but he is not the trilogy’s recurring protagonist. Digory Kirke belongs to the Narnia stories, while Orual is the narrator of Till We Have Faces. These characters are sometimes mixed together because Lewis reused themes of language, moral choice, spiritual conflict, and transformation across his fiction.
