Who is the gamekeeper at Hogwarts in "Harry Potter"?

The gamekeeper at Hogwarts in “Harry Potter” is Rubeus Hagrid. He looks after the school grounds, assists with magical creatures, and lives in a hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest.

Hagrid was once a Hogwarts student, but he was expelled during his third year after being wrongly blamed for opening the Chamber of Secrets. Albus Dumbledore later helped him remain connected to the school by arranging work as its gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys and Grounds. His close knowledge of the grounds and creatures makes him an important part of Hogwarts life.

Hagrid is more than a groundskeeper in the story. Beginning in Harry’s third year, he also becomes the Care of Magical Creatures professor, teaching students about animals such as hippogriffs, thestrals and blast-ended skrewts. His love of dangerous creatures often causes problems, but it also reflects his loyalty and compassion.

A common mix-up is confusing Hagrid’s gamekeeper role with his teaching position. They are separate jobs: Hagrid is the Hogwarts gamekeeper throughout the main story and later also teaches Care of Magical Creatures. The character is portrayed in the films by Robbie Coltrane.
