Who is the father of the god Forseti?

The story behind the answer

Baldr is the father of Forseti in Norse mythology. Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda names Forseti as the son of Baldr and Nanna, making Baldr the canonical answer to this question.

Forseti is associated with justice, reconciliation, and the settling of disputes. He presides from Glitnir, a radiant hall described as having golden pillars and a silver roof. Those who bring cases before him are said to leave reconciled, reflecting his role as a mediator rather than a warrior.

Baldr’s death is one of the central tragedies of Norse myth. He is killed through Loki’s scheme involving mistletoe, and Forseti belongs to the generation connected with the gods’ later renewal after Ragnarök. Nanna, Forseti’s mother, dies from grief after Baldr’s death and joins him in the realm of the dead.

A common mix-up is to identify Odin as Forseti’s father because Odin is Baldr’s father. Odin is therefore Forseti’s grandfather, not his parent.
