Who is the father of the fictional character Frodo Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins’s father in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Drogo Baggins. Frodo is the son of Drogo and Primula Brandybuck, linking him to both the Baggins family and the Brandybuck family.

Drogo married Primula, who was the sister of Frodo’s close friend and future companion, Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck. The couple died in a boating accident on the Brandywine River when Frodo was still young, leaving him an orphan.

Afterward, Frodo was taken in by his relative Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo became his guardian and eventually left him Bag End, along with the mysterious ring he had acquired during his earlier journey. This family connection explains why Frodo inherits both Bilbo’s home and the dangerous burden associated with the ring.

Drogo should not be confused with Bungo Baggins, Bilbo’s father, or Otho Sackville-Baggins, a relative who wants Bag End.
