Who is the current captain of the Edmonton Oilers?

The story behind the answer

The current captain of the Edmonton Oilers is Connor McDavid.

McDavid became the Oilers’ captain in October 2016, taking over the leadership role at only 19 years old. He was the youngest captain in NHL history at the time of his appointment, reflecting how quickly he had become the central player and public face of the franchise.

A center and elite playmaker, McDavid was selected first overall by Edmonton in the 2015 NHL Draft. He won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year in 2016 and has since collected multiple Art Ross Trophies as the league’s scoring leader, along with Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL’s most valuable player.

Fans sometimes confuse the captain with other prominent Oilers stars. Leon Draisaitl is an alternate captain and McDavid’s longtime teammate, while Darnell Nurse and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are also important members of the leadership group. McDavid has worn Edmonton’s captaincy since 2016 and remains the team’s captain in the current NHL season.
