In the 1970 Stanley Cup Final, which Boston Bruins defenseman scored the overtime goal that won Game 4 against St. Louis?

The story behind the answer

Bobby Orr scored the overtime goal that won Game 4 of the 1970 Stanley Cup Final for the Boston Bruins against the St. Louis Blues.

The goal came at 40 seconds of overtime on May 10, 1970, at Boston Garden. Orr took a pass from Derek Sanderson and fired the puck past Blues goaltender Glenn Hall, giving Boston a 4–3 victory and a four-game sweep.

The famous photograph of Orr flying horizontally after being tripped by St. Louis defenseman Noel Picard became one of hockey’s most recognizable images. The goal also gave the Bruins their first Stanley Cup championship since 1941.

Orr was a defenseman, but he was renowned for his offensive ability, skating, and playmaking. In the same 1969–70 season, he became the first defenseman to win the NHL scoring title. The Bruins’ other major star, Phil Esposito, scored twice in the deciding game, but Orr supplied the championship-winning goal.
